East Herts Geology Club

(formally East Herts Mineral and Fossil Club)

The Club was founded in 2000.  We have about 40 members, and meet roughly once a month at various venues in and around Ware. Our activities include lectures from guest speakers or our members, social evenings, and field trips.

We changed our name in 2004 to reflect our interest in all aspects of geology and associated subjects.

We have close connexions with geology evening classes which, until 2006, ran at the local further education college.  80% of our members have at some time been on college courses, and a considerable number of us have obtained ‘A’ level or GCSE qualifications.  Some have now gone on to study, or tutor with the OU.

The club retains access to an extensive geological specimen collection which was used with the college classes, and at intervals runs evenings, based in part on study of a range of specimens, set out with explanations and questions.  That is one way in which it tries to cater for people who have an interest in geology but lack much knowledge or experience.

Field trip venues are local and further afield  The most popular trips are weekends and extended weekends, in recent years these have included Antrim, Co. Wexford (S.E. Ireland), the S.W. Highlands and the Auvergne.  Weekend visits during 2009 have been to S.E. Devon, the Yorkshire coast, and Wulfrath, east of the Rhine graben,
